Palio di Siena: What Should a Visitor Know?

Updated October 26, 2026 · 5 min read

Contrada flags hanging above a narrow brick street in Siena

The Palio is not a staged horse-racing attraction but a civic festival built around Siena’s contrade. The two traditional races take place in Piazza del Campo on 2 July and 16 August. Ten of the city’s 17 contrade compete in each race, and the horses run three laps without saddles. Knowing that structure makes the banners, neighbourhood museums and rehearsals intelligible rather than decorative.

Do you need a ticket?

Standing in the centre of Piazza del Campo is free, but entry closes when the authorised capacity is reached. Paid places are on the temporary stands, at windows and on balconies around the square. The City of Siena’s Palio office says there is no central ticket office for those seats: arrangements are made with the individual stand managers or property owners. Treat unsolicited online offers cautiously and check the current municipal access notice before committing money.

Free does not mean easy. You may stand for hours in a crowded, exposed space with limited freedom to leave. Access routes and cut-off times are published for each edition and can change. Do not rely on the previous year’s timetable, and do not plan another timed visit for the same afternoon.

Why arrive before race day?

The horses are assigned three days beforehand, followed by six trial races, morning and evening. Those sessions reveal more of the event than a last-minute dash to the final race: the contrade accompany their horses, the city changes rhythm and you can understand how the competition belongs to neighbourhood life.

The historic procession is also substantial. The municipality describes more than 600 participants representing the contrade and institutions of the former Sienese Republic. It leaves the cathedral area and enters Piazza del Campo before the race. If your priority is costume, flags and ceremony rather than the brief race itself, the procession and trials may be the more rewarding experience.

What the contrade change

A contrada is not simply a team chosen for the day. It is a neighbourhood community with its own identity, territory and traditions. Visitors should not treat its symbols as interchangeable souvenirs or walk into private celebrations as though they were public shows. A local explanation helps because the rivalries, alliances and street boundaries are nearly invisible without context.

The Palio walking tour lasts three hours. Its description combines Siena landmarks, local sweets and an introduction to Palio history. It is useful for context on an ordinary day; it is not a race ticket and does not promise access to a contrada dinner or restricted space. Check the language and exact route on the booking page.

Is race day right for you?

Choose it if the communal ritual matters more than comfort and you can accept dense crowds, waiting and sudden changes. Choose a trial day or a Palio-themed walk if you want room to observe and ask questions. Travellers with limited mobility, small children, heat sensitivity or anxiety in packed spaces should read the edition-specific access rules and consider a paid viewpoint or a different day rather than assuming the centre of the square will work.

The Palio deserves neither romantic shorthand nor a checklist approach. Give it time, follow the municipality’s current instructions and remember that visitors are entering a living Sienese tradition, not the other way round.
